Smithsonian Castle
Located at 1000 Jefferson Dr SW, Washington, DC 20560. on the National Mall in Washington, DC, Smithsonian Castle is the headquarters of the Smithsonian Institution. It is a Gothic Revival and Romanesque structure. The building was designed by James Renwick, Jr. and is built of red sandstone from Seneca, Maryland. The Smithsonian building is comprised of two wings: the central portion and the east wing. The east wing was added in 1849 and was used as an office for the Secretary of Smithsonian. It was then fireproofed and the third and fourth floors were added. The central portion was a museum, and contained a lecture hall and a basement. The west wing was a library and reading room.
